It’s time to update you with the most recent statistics on the Java & PHP software stacks’ popularity within the Jelastiс PaaS. As usual, you’ll see the overall numbers, distribution by regions and the monthly trends. This month, the results are more interesting with stats from another one of our European hosting partners, Neohost, located in Ukraine.
Databases
MySQL continues to dominate as usual and it looks like other database servers have almost no chance of overtaking it. Moreover, the MySQL market share has expanded 2% compared to the previous month.
Looking by regions, it’s interesting to note that MariaDB, MySQL database fork, is quite popular in Ukraine with a 24% of share.
Here are this month's numbers in a table format:
The database popularity during the last year remained quite steady looking at the following chart:
Java application servers
The number one Java application server remains the same with Tomcat 7 at 76% market share. There are not any significant changes this month in this software stack popularity— with all of the numbers remaining mostly the same.
Let’s see the distribution by regions: It appears that in Ukraine, Tomcat 7 has even more fans than in other countries!
The current numbers:
Let’s see what happened to Java app servers during the last year:
PHP application servers
It's no surprise that Apache leads this competition with a huge margin: 71% vs 29% of the share for Nginx PHP server.
The percentages in regions are quite different, e.g. Russian and Sweden PHP developers prefer to deploy their apps to Nginx.
The overall figures:
If we analyze the following chart, we can conclude that the popularity of Nginx increases from month to month.
Java versions
Java 6 and Java 7 have remained steady in their percentages: 12% and 88% respectively.
Java 6 continuous to lose traction within the regions.

The chart below demonstrates the changes over the last year in JVM popularity.
PHP versions
Nothing surprising here: PHP 5.4 overtakes its "older brother" with a significant margin.
Comparing the numbers in regions, we can see that in Russia PHP 5.3 and 5.4 have almost the same usage.

Let's see how the numbers have changed!
Note: We are counting the amount of users who deployed apps using specific stacks. All test accounts are excluded.
